"The guards of The Priory are ghoulish women in every state of decay. They move constantly through the room looking for a weak soul to eat, dead or alive. Their eyes are the whole range between blind rheumatism and bloodshot addict. They bathe their skin in a clay: perhaps in some memory of the constant search for feminine beauty – but this clay serves only to exaggerate the mottled pallor beneath. Each bears the marks and cuts of countless scuffles. Many are diseased. Many have shorn off parts of their own bodies, in particular the breasts. They are clothed in the ragged armor of many times and places and are always shoeless. Their weapons are as varied as their armor, but always far too large to their proportions."
